You dont need to have them, but they improve your gameplay by a significant amount. I think M+ is where WA:s really shine, since its so fast paced and you really have so much personal responsibility that you just need to focus on whats happening around your character, and for that WA:s are god sent. Same with the game, if you start to look allover your screen for information, during that time a skill could go off in m+ that you could have interrupted and you wipe, you dont move out of the shit on the ground coz you are distracted. For that 1-2 seconds something could happen infront of you that will wreck your car. Its like if you are driving 250km/h and start checking your dashboard for how much gass you have left and how fast youare going. I have played wow for 18 years now and just the QoL improvement from not having to check your cooldowns by looking at different spots on the screen, or when you procc something you have a clear indicator how long the proc will last and when you activate a cd it can show you a million things right in front of the screen. It is not about 'learning' your spec as it is making things easyer to notice and execute your rotation and spec in a way that you can focus 100% on the actual content at hand.
